Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has been named among the top tier of hospitals in the country for stroke and cardiac care, according to Healthgrades, a leading resource that evaluates approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide solely on patient outcomes. Stony Brook has been named as one of:
-
America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care™ (2015-24), making it one of only two hospitals in New York State to receive this distinction for 10 consecutive years.
-
America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care™ (2016-24), the only hospital in New York State to receive this award for 9 consecutive years.
This places SBUH within the top 5 percent for stroke care and the top 10 percent for cardiac care, reflecting SBUH’s outstanding clinical performance and distinguishing it as one of the country’s leading hospitals. The 2024 Healthgrades analysis revealed that the variation in performance among hospitals continues to widen, making it increasingly important to seek care at top-rated programs. From 2020-22, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care Award had, on average, a 41.6 percent lower mortality risk than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award and hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care Award had, on average, a 33.5 percent lower mortality risk.
“Healthgrades congratulates Stony Brook University Hospital for being a national leader and demonstrating a deep commitment to providing high quality care to all patients,” said Dr. Brad Bowman, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades. “As health systems nationwide endeavor to elevate the quality of care, these elite facilities provide a roadmap for success.
