Now #58 Among National Universities and #26 Among Public Universities

STONY BROOK, NY—September 18, 2023—Stony Brook University, a flagship in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, has seen a significant increase in its ranking in the U.S. News & World Report 2024 America’s Best Colleges ranking. The university moved up 19 places and now stands at #58 among national universities from its previous ranking of #77. It also moved up 5 places, jumping to #26 from #31 among public universities.  In addition, Stony Brook was ranked #12 among national universities for its social mobility rank, which ties them at #2 among all AAU institutions.

This is the highest ranking Stony Brook has achieved in the history of this publication.

  • This is the highest rank ever for a SUNY institution.

  • Stony Brook continues to be ranked as the #1 public university in New York.

  • Additional Stony Brook rankings named include

    • #33 Best Colleges for Veterans

    • #39 in Undergraduate Psychology Programs

    • #58 in Most Innovative Schools

One of the drivers of Stony Brook’s rise in the rankings has been an increase in its 6-year graduation rate frozen 68% in 2016 to 78% in 2023, and the most economically challenged students at Stony Brook — those who receive Pell grants — graduate at a rate of 80%.

“Stony Brook has long been recognized as a leader supporting the social and economic mobility of our graduates and their families, and the ability to create a dynamic, engaged environment that welcomes ambition has provided us with great forward movement in becoming one of the most prominent public flagship research universities in the nation. Our reputation across New York and the world has grown with the selection of Stony Brook University as the anchor institution for New York Climate Exchange and the recent $500 million unrestricted endowment gift made by the Simons Foundation. As we celebrate the university’s upward momentum reflected in these new rankings, the commitment of our exceptional students, faculty, and staff, as well as our partners locally and across the globe make our continued progress possible,” said Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis.

The publication reports on nearly 1,500 U.S. four year bachelor’s degree-granting institutions on as many as 19 measures. Ranks are based on methodology used by the publication that includes graduation and retention ranks (including first-year retention rates) and graduation rate performance; Pell graduation rates and graduation performance, peer assessment rank; faculty research metrics; financial resources per student and borrowers’ debt among other criteria. U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Colleges rankings are considered to be one of the premier rankings of U.S. higher education institutions.
