Foodlab garden workers

Foodlab garden workersWhat if we thought about food not only as nourishment but also as an important part of how we prevent disease, support healing, and build healthier lives and communities?

The FoodLab at Stony Brook Southampton is hosting a Food as Medicine Symposium on Friday, September 25, bringing together medicine, nutrition, culture and the culinary arts to explore the growing role of food and lifestyle in health and well-being.

The symposium features a dynamic lineup of speakers and experiences, and will be held from 9 am to 1 pm at Duke Lecture Hall in Chancellors Hall. Tickets are $75 each, and you can register online.

Speakers include:

Raja Jaber, MD
Director of Lifestyle and Integrative Medicine, Stony Brook Medicine; Clinical Professor of Family Medicine
The Science of Positive Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine
Jaber will explore the evidence behind Food as Medicine and how nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management and social connection work together to prevent and manage chronic disease.

Paula Montagna, MS, RD, CDN, CNSC
Director of Clinical Nutrition, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital
Food as Medicine in Action: From Evidence to the Kitchen
We’ll move from conversation to the kitchen as Montagna translates nutrition science into the foods we actually eat through an interactive culinary demonstration.

Sohl Lee, PhD
Associate Professor of Art, Stony Brook University
Seaweed Soup: Traditional Food, Modern Medicine and Postpartum Healing
Lee brings culture and tradition into the Food as Medicine conversation through the Korean practice of miyeok-guk — seaweed soup traditionally eaten after childbirth — and what generations of food knowledge can teach us about nourishment, healing and care.

Krista Zvoch, RD
Director of Nutrition, StoryPoint Group
Food, Longevity and Quality of Life
Drawing on more than two decades in clinical, community, and corporate nutrition, Zvoch will explore how what we eat can influence healthy aging, resilience, independence and quality of life across the lifespan.

Since conversations about food belong around the table, the symposium will conclude with a farm-to-table lunch inspired by Food as Medicine principles, with an opportunity to continue the conversation with presenters and fellow guests.
