The SBU women’s lacrosse team defeated Delaware, 18-6, to advance to the CAA championship game.

The Stony Brook University women’s and men’s lacrosse teams both advanced to their respective Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament championship games with victories on May 4.

The top-seeded women’s team trounced Delaware, 18-6, outscoring the Blue Hens 9-1 in the third quarter to salt the game away. The Seawolves (13-3 overall, 7-0 in CAA) advanced to face No. 2 seed and tournament host Towson in the CAA title game on May 6, their first-ever CAA championship appearance after winning eight America East championships under coach Joe Spallina.

Kailyn Hart and Ellie Masera scored four goals each to lead the attack. Verhulst added a hat trick while Jolie Creo and Morgan Mitchell (three assists) scored two goals each. Masera, the CAA Midfielder of the Year, also grabbed a career-high tying 12 draw controls and added two caused turnovers. Haley Dillon and Ella Whitehouse led the Seawolves’ defense with three caused turnovers each.

The SBU men’s lacrosse team defeated Drexel, 13-10, to advance to the CAA championship game.

In the men’s CAA Tournament, the third-seeded Seawolves came up big with a 13-10 victory over No. 2 seed Drexel in Newark, Delaware. The win propelled Stony Brook (9-6, 5-2) to its first-ever appearance in the CAA championship game on May 6, against top-ranked Delaware. Stony Brook earned its first win in a conference tournament since it defeated Vermont, 16-13, in the 2015 America East semifinals. That year also marked the Seawolves’ last appearance in the finals, when it faced Albany.

“We are proud of what they accomplished during the regular season, which gave us a chance to compete in the CAA Tournament. Once you get to this point of the season, anything is possible and all we wanted was a chance to play hard and we’ll see where we stand,” said coach Anthony Gilardi.

Stony Brook used an offensive attack that featured seven different goal scorers, a five-goal game from Jonathan Huber, and a 10-0 scoring run between the first and second quarters. On defense, the Seawolves received a standout performance from goalie Jamison MacLachlan, who made 15 saves.

The CAA women’s championship game between Stony Brook and Towson will be at 12:30 pm on May 6, and the game will be broadcast live on LacrosseTV.

The men’s title game between Stony Brook and Delaware will begin at 3:30 pm on May 6, and the game will also be broadcast live on LacrosseTV.
