Stony Brook University maintained its top standing in the 2025 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges publication, ranking as the No. 1 public university in New York for the third straight year.
Stony Brook equaled its national ranking from last year at #58, which was the highest rank it had ever achieved, and the highest national rank for any State University of New York institution this year. Four other schools — Villanova, North Carolina State, University of Massachusetts-Amherst and University of California, Merced — finished tied with Stony Brook nationally.
SBU was also ranked #26 among public universities nationwide, equal to 2024 and a five-spot increase from 2023.
Interim President Richard L. McCormick said Stony Brook has a “steadfast commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience”, and exemplifies “all the most important developments in modern American higher education,” including achievements in research and a diverse student body.
The publication also ranked Stony Brook #15 in top performers on social mobility, #34 for best colleges for veterans, #50 for undergraduate computer science programs, #53 for most innovative schools and #53 for undergraduate psychology programs.
The national rankings evaluated nearly 1,500 colleges and universities using up to 17 measures of academic quality. View the complete rankings at the U.S. News website.
U.S. News changed its methodology last year for the first time in its more than 40-year history, giving more weight to educational outcomes for low-income students. More than half a school’s rank is made up of measures related to how successful an institution is at enrolling and graduating students from different backgrounds with manageable debt and postgraduation success, according to the publication.
