One of the highlights of Inauguration Week will happen on Wednesday, April 15, as President Andrea Goldsmith leads three Presidential Panel Discussions at the Sidney Gelber Auditorium in the Student Activities Center.

This panel will convene leaders from across the engineering profession to reflect on their professional journeys, what exciting technologies lie on the horizon and how powerful technologies can be harnessed to benefit humanity while avoiding their pitfalls. Panelists include Jennifer Cochran, vice president for the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and vice president for strategic initiatives at Stanford University; Ayanna Howard, an innovator, entrepreneur, leader and international expert in robotics and AI; Muriel Médard, NEC Chair of Software Science and Engineering for the School of Engineering at MIT and professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department; Manuela Veloso, founder and head of JPMorganChase AI Research and Herbert A. Simon University Professor Emerita at Carnegie Mellon University; and Telle Whitney, senior executive leader, entrepreneur, author and recognized advocate and expert on women and technology.

This panel will bring together influential leaders from across business, academia, government and non-profits for an engaging discussion highlighting their experiences along with how to lead in times of disruption and change. Panelists include Karen Persichilli Keogh, Stony Brook University alumnus and Secretary to Governor Kathy Hochul, the highest-ranking appointed position in state government; Maria Klawe, president of Math for America, former president of Harvey Mudd College and former dean of engineering and professor of computer science at Princeton University; Barbara G. Novick, co-founder of BlackRock who serves on the boards of Intel, New York Life Insurance Company, Jewish Communal Relations Council (JCRC) and the Growth Curve Capital Advisory Board; Marilyn Simons, a leader and advocate in the not-for-profit scientific community and co-founder and chair of the Simons Foundation; and Anne-Marie Slaughter, CEO of New America and a globally recognized scholar, policy innovator and public leader.

This panel, moderated by President Goldsmith, will feature student and alumni entrepreneurs discussing their experience in translating bold ideas into real-world impact. The conversation will celebrate innovation along with the power of the university ecosystem to inspire entrepreneurs and support them in their startup journeys. Panelists include Kelly Kaon, a third-year medical student at the Stony Brook Renaissance School of Medicine who founded Dermatological, a public health organization with the mission of building skin health and hygiene skills from the ground up; Laurie Olson, a seasoned pharmaceutical executive who served as the executive vice president, strategy and commercial operations at Pfizer Inc. until 2018; Derek Peterson, two-time SBU alumnus and founder and chief executive officer of Soter Technologies, an engineering and manufacturing company focused on addressing global challenges through innovative technology solutions; and Loren Skeist, MD, who partnered with Stony Brook University in 2021 to establish the Spellman High Voltage Electronics Laboratory, the first lab of its kind. to encourage interest in voltage power conversion design and foster collaboration in high-voltage research.
