SUNY leadership and all 64 campus presidents today issued an open letter in support of Tax-Free NY. The signed letter is available online. Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, is among the signatories.
“As the leadership of SUNY’s 64 campuses, we enthusiastically support Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Tax-Free NY initiative. This innovative proposal has tremendous promise to strengthen the knowledge economy that is steadily building across our regions and state through the many partnerships between the State University and the business community.
“Our campuses are located within 30 miles of virtually every home, school, and existing business in New York State. In many areas, we are the largest employers. Our system – the largest, most comprehensive system of public higher education in the country – is guided by a strategic plan that will be pivotal to revitalizing New York’s economy.
“Tax-Free NY represents an unprecedented opportunity to harness the power of SUNY research, discovery, and education to fuel new business, new job opportunities, and economic growth across our state. This initiative has the potential to redefine what it means to learn, conduct research, and do business in New York State, and our SUNY institutions embrace our vital role in realizing this impact to its fullest potential.
“We strongly support Tax-Free NY, commend Governor Cuomo for his initiative and leadership, and urge the legislature to adopt this proposal during this legislative session.”
