STONY BROOK, N.Y., May 27, 2016 — The Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center Fund expressed their gratitude to the staff of administrators, physicians, nurses, nutritionists, occupational therapists, social workers, and physical therapists of Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) Burn Center for their untiring efforts and compassionate care of the burned patients at the annual Burn Center Recognition Day on May 15.

The Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters, a key benefactor of the Burn Center, sponsored the event. These firefighters work throughout the year raising money that enables the Burn Center to provide burn garments for patients who can’t afford them, purchase important equipment, have nurses hold educational burn prevention seminars in the community, and even supply DVDs for patients to enjoy.

Officers of the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Fund, Dawn R. Meyer, President, Jeff Bailes, 1st Vice President, Barry Vicik, 2nd Vice President, Claudia Harford, Secretary, Jerry Owenburg, Treasurer, were sworn into office on Burn Recognition Day at Stony Brook University Hospital by Assemblyman Michael J. Fitzpatrick.

Stephen (Chris) Marshall was presented the Burn Nurse of the Year award; Jonathan Schneider was named the Nursing Assistant of the Year; and Richard Gehrt received the Robert Lyons Award, which is given to community members in recognition of their selfless contribution to the Burn Center.

Marcia Simon, PhD, Director of the Living Skin Bank, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, spoke about short- and long-term burn therapies, and Steven Sandoval, MD, Medical Director of the Burn Center, Stony Brook University Hospital, discussed current burn research.

Dr. Sandoval, who received the Care Provider of the Year award, expressed his appreciation, “Burn Recognition Day gives the opportunity for all members of the team — prehospital providers, legislative, and Suffolk government — to meet and recognize the shared support of the treatment of burn patients.”

In addition, numerous organizations and individuals were acknowledged for their ongoing support and generous contributions to the Burn Center, including Friends of Islip Firefighters, Quogue FD, New York Fire Alarm Association, Southampton Fire Department Juniors, Fire Marshal Association of Suffolk County, Craig Zitek, Sag Harbor FD Jrs, Lindenhurst Fire Department, Long Island Bagpipes, Red Knights Chapter 25 NY, Smithtown Rotary, Stephen L. Weiner, GJT Retting, and Sayville Ford.

As the only designated burn care facility for the more than 1.5 million residents of Suffolk County, the SBUH Burn Center coordinates burn services throughout the county, and conducts training and research in burn care. The Burn Center also serves as a resource to neighboring community-based hospitals. Patients of all ages – from infants through geriatrics – are treated at the Burn Center.
