Zachary A. Morris, an associate professor in Stony Brook University’s School of Social Welfare, has been named a recipient of the 2024 Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) Social Policy Researcher Award for an Emerging Scholar. Morris conducts policy-relevant research on the financial and social inclusion of people with disabilities.

Morris was recognized by the SSWR as an emerging scholar who has made notable contributions to research that has influenced the direction, design, and/or implementation of social policy and its effects on marginalized and oppressed populations. He was honored at the 2024 SSWR Conference in Washington, DC in January.

“As an emerging scholar, Dr. Morris’ work has focused on removing the financial barriers to the full and equal participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of society,” said School of Social Welfare Dean Shari Miller. “His research and scholarship has already reached beyond the emergent to have notable impact on the body of knowledge nationally and globally, but also on public discourse, policy discourse, and U.S. legislative pathways for reform. Dr. Morris’ work reflects, in truly applied ways, the mission and values of the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University; with his wholly authentic and unremitting commitment to his work and his determination, Dr. Morris will undoubtedly persist in making the kind of contributions through his research and scholarship that translate into impact that changes lives.”

“I am honored to receive this award from the Society for Social Work and Research and am deeply grateful for the collaboration and insights of numerous colleagues, mentors, students, and research participants who have significantly contributed to my work” said Morris. “Living with a disability should not equate to living with financial hardship. My research aims to spotlight the shortcomings of contemporary disability policy, while advocating for necessary reforms. This award not only recognizes my past efforts in this critical area but also reinforces my determination to continue rigorous, policy-relevant research that directly addresses and seeks to ameliorate these challenges.”

Previous to joining Stony Brook, Morris served as a research and policy analyst for the City of Berkeley, CA; a summer fellow in disability policy research at the Mathematica Policy Research; and a fellow in public affairs at the Coro Center for Civic Leadership. He earned his PhD and MSW from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Social Welfare; his MPhil at the University of Oxford, Green Templeton College; and his BPhil at the University of Pittsburgh Honors College.
