The Young Writers Summer Workshops, sponsored by Stony Brook Southampton’s Creative Writing MFA and the Young Artists and Writers Project (YAWP), are dedicated to mentoring young people in the development of creative expression and critical thinking through writing.
The five-day workshops — all held virtually in July — pair seasoned writing instructors and adult writers with students, ages 13-18, in fiction, essay, poetry and scriptwriting.
The Young Writers Creative Writing Workshops will take place online via Zoom from 10 am to 3 pm each day, with three sessions to choose from: July 6-10, July 20-24 or July 27-31.
Student writers will explore fiction, poetry, dialogue and personal essay. By week’s end, students will have several pieces of completed work to submit or publish and will participate in a reading of their work to be showcased online.
The Young Writers Scriptwriting Workshop will take place online via Zoom from 10 am to 3 pm July 13-17.
Each student will create a short, two-character script for stage or screen. The final day is devoted to a rehearsed reading of students’ work to be showcased online. This course is led by Will Chandler, who is a professional screenwriter, Nicholl Fellowship winner, script consultant and full-time faculty member in Stony Brook’s undergraduate film program.
The cost of each workshop is $295.
