“We are at a pivotal moment in science and innovation. To maintain America’s technological leadership we must prioritize funding that supports a broad range of scientific fields,” said Gardner. “Strong investments in research are necessary to fuel critical groundbreaking discoveries with serious implications for America’s national security, health care, and economy.”

Gardner’s visit comes at a critical time as Congress gears up to begin discussing the federal budget for FY26. Advocating for continued investment in research and development (R&D), Gardner reinforced that cutting-edge research at institutions like Stony Brook are essential for the US to win the global innovation race.

“For the U.S. to maintain superiority in the innovation race, particularly in competition with nations like China, robust investments in science and research is non-negotiable,” said Gardner. Delaying investments in research including quantum, AI, and cybersecurity, means falling behind. America’s future depends on the research breakthroughs we fund today.”

These meetings in Washington, DC were coordinated by SBU’s Office for Federal Relations and serve to strengthen Stony Brook’s ongoing relationships with key stakeholders in addition to advancing the university’s federal priorities.
