Featuring former SBU student Eeva-Liina Luukkanen, winner of the 2023 Undergraduate Concerto Competition
The University Orchestra will present a concert on Tuesday, November 7, at 7:30 pm on Staller Center’s Main Stage. Conducted by Susan Deaver, the orchestra will perform Coleridge-Taylor’s Overture, to the Song of Hiawatha; Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances; and selections of music by Britten, Haydn, Glazunov and contemporary English composer Libby Croad. The featured soloist is violinist Eeva-Liina Luukkanen, who will return to Stony Brook from her native Finland as winner of the 2023 Undergraduate Concerto Competition, in a performance of the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto.

More About Eeva-Liina Luukkanen
At the age of seven, Eeva-Liina Luukkanen started her violin studies in the Espoo Music Institute in Finland. Studying under Joanna Hyrsky-Tran Minh, Luukkanen has competed in the national level of music institutes in Finland. Chamber music and orchestra have been close to her heart, and for two years, she was the concertmaster of the Tapiola Youth Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra has performed around Europe, with Erkki Lasonpalo as conductor.
In 2022, Luukkanen moved to New York to study anthropology at Stony Brook University, where she continued playing violin in the University Orchestra. She was a member of the first violin section and was selected to be a principal player in Spring 2023. While at Stony Brook, she also participated in chamber music courses and played a concert with the university’s Baroque Ensemble. This fall, Luukkanen started medical studies at Helsinki University back in her homeland of Finland.
