Stony Brook University is launching its first annual “Giving Day,” a 24-hour online fundraising drive, on Tuesday, April 30. Giving Day encourages the community to support the University’s remarkable students, faculty, and staff and to advance Stony Brook Medicine’s mission to provide the highest quality healthcare.
“The philanthropic support of our alumni and friends plays a powerful role in the lives of Stony Brook students,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., “and empowers our faculty to pursue transformative research. Giving Day unites the entire community, bringing them together on one day to make a resounding statement about their belief in the University and the importance of its mission, vision and values.”
All gifts will be tracked in real time on Stony Brook’s Giving Day website, including counts for gifts from Nassau County, Suffolk County, and the each of the five boroughs of New York City, with regional bragging rights on the line in the “Battle of the Boroughs” and “Clash of the Counties.”
In launching Giving Day, Stony Brook joins a successful trend among Association of American Universities institutions, creating a University-specific day to celebrate philanthropy.
“Stony Brook University Giving Day is all about participation,” said Dexter A. Bailey Jr., Senior Vice President for University Advancement. “It’s an exciting opportunity for our community to demonstrate Stony Brook pride while advancing the incredible work being done by students, faculty, and staff across our campuses and around the world.”
The 24-hour online fundraising event will officially begin at 12:01 a.m. EDT on April 30. Participants can direct their gifts into one of several categories under the Giving Day banner, including (but not limited to): Student Scholarships; Research and Scientific Discovery; Diversity and Inclusion; Creativity and Artistic Expression; and Healthcare and Wellness.
“Having the entire Seawolves community from across the country and around the world participate on Giving Day will make for an amazing collective contribution,” said Justus Klimavicius (‘19), president of Stony Brook’s Undergraduate Student Government, who will be directing his Giving Day contribution to the University’s traditional Roth Regatta competition.
Will the SBU Staller Center be listed as a “Giving Day” option? If so, I would like to donate to the Staller Center.
Also, will the SBU SOM Cancer Center be listed as a “Giving Day” option? If so, I would like to donate to our Cancer Center.
