Why Boosters Are Mandated and Why They Matter…
Stony Brook University operates under the guidance and mandates of the State of New York and the SUNY system, and our recent booster requirement for all students is in compliance with NYS Governor Hochul’s mandate (effective January 15, 2022) that all SUNY and CUNY students receive a booster.
Dozens of colleges and universities across the country have already taken that step, designed to keep campuses safe for in-person learning.
The CDC emphasizes the importance of booster vaccines for many reasons, such as prevention of symptomatic confirmed cases of COVID, reduced risk of infection, and the reduced risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to others (since less severe disease reduces transmission to others). See more in the CDC’s recent report: Data Supporting the Need for a Booster Shot.
And a report from Johns Hopkins Medicine – Coronavirus and COVID-19: Younger Adults Are at Risk, Too – reminds students that “even healthy people in their 20s and 30s can catch the coronavirus, spread it to others and suffer from severe illness” or worse.
WEST CAMPUS EMPLOYEES:
If You’ve Tested Positive for COVID…
… we now have a short, online Return to Work COVID Clearance Form you will be required to complete where you will be asked to attest that you no longer have a fever and that you’ve completed a five-day isolation period. Based on your responses, you will be given additional guidance or cleared to return to work. Your supervisor will automatically be notified of your return to work date as well. If you reported your positive results to the Health Information Line (HIL), you will receive an email containing the Clearance Form link.
Masking Guidance Reminder and Minor Correction…
This SBU News story summarizes new masking guidance shared earlier this week in a special Stronger Together Update, including a now-corrected reference to ASTM F2100 masks.
Updated Testing Schedule…
Please visit the Testing and Screening webpage of our Stronger Together site for the Spring COVID Testing Schedule and please remember to continue testing as required, based on your vaccination status. Those who have not provided vaccination information must test weekly. Those who have recorded their vaccination status should test monthly. As a helpful reminder, the week of January 24 is for vaccinated employees with last names A-E.
As shared in January 19’s Stony Brook Health Beat…
Stony Brook Medicine’s COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline is a resource for the campus and surrounding community. Some information is tailored specifically to hospital employees. You can call the hotline at (631) 638-1320, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm for information on COVID vaccines and boosters, including site locations; COVID PCR tests; monoclonal antibody infusion; the New York State Excelsior Vaccine Pass; proof of vaccines and more.
If You Haven’t Yet, Get Your Flu Vaccine…
Flu vaccines through CVS will be available to all students, faculty and staff in the Student Union Ballroom on Thursday, January 27 and Wednesday, February 9, both from 11 am – 2 pm. Registration is required on the links above and please bring your insurance card.
