The Stony Brook University Community — and extended community — is known for its Seawolf pride. Whether it’s a family tradition to attend Stony Brook University or the instant connection sparked by seeing someone in Seawolf gear, Seawolf pride runs deep and wide.

As Stony Brook University continues to beautify its campus, it is not lost on faculty, staff, students and alumni how much that pride is taken into account, from the recent installation of the Wolfie statue and bench to the May 22 unveiling of the new Stony Brook Landmark Letters.

“Earlier this year, we welcomed the addition of the Wolfie Statue, sharing pride in our university and of our beloved mascot. Now, we welcome the SBU Landmark Letters, embellished with bold lettering and a brazen shield,” said Stony Brook University Interim President Richard McCormick. “These letters dare to boldly represent Stony Brook, serving as a warm welcome to all those who visit our university,” he added.

The Stony Brook University Landmark Letters, which have found a home in front of the Stony Brook Union, have a bold, distinguished look and spell out S-B-U. Representing the university’s presence and prestige, these letters are designed to serve as a background for major events, like school tours, orientation and graduation. They were also thought to help strengthen the sense of school spirit of those who have walked the campus of Stony Brook — both past and present — while adding to the excitement of those who see themselves here in the future.

“Our Landmark Letters were brought about to symbolize Stony Brook University pride in a big way, reinforcing our school identity,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Rick Gatteau. “I know these letters will quickly become a much-loved asset to our campus community. They’ll serve as backdrops for photos, a meeting place for students and, eventually, will become integrated in some of our campus traditions — or create traditions of their own. It will be exciting to see all that Stony Brook has in store for these letters,” he added.

And, it won’t just be for those students, faculty and staff who are on campus every day. These Landmark Letters are designed to unite Seawolves from all walks of life, encompassing the energy and community that defines Stony Brook University.

“Just like Wolfie brings us together in the present, the Landmark Letters will connect us across generations,” said Undergraduate Student Government President Nistha Boghra. “I hope someday, possibly years from now, myself and other Seawolves can come back to the Union and be reminded of all of the wonderful memories from the time we spent here.”
