Stony Brook University welcomed students back to campus as the fall semester gets underway with a variety of events and activities prior to the start of classes Monday, Aug. 22.

Freshmen and international students moved in on Aug. 15 and 16, with transfer students moving in on Thursday, Aug. 18, and returning students coming back throughout the week.

“I hope that as part of your Stony Brook journey that you will get involved in campus life, explore new interests and passions, and consider this campus a resource to enrich you not only academically, but also professionally and personally,” said Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis when addressing the First-Year Student Convocation on Friday.

McInnis advised incoming students to “stay curious,” and described her own college journey as one where her plan changed from a medical career to art after taking a class in Ancient Greek Art. She encouraged students to explore all that Stony Brook has to offer as much as they possibly can.

“Consider it an unofficial requirement,” she said. “Attend a lecture on a subject outside your comfort zone. Seek out your professors after class and ask questions, or better yet, go visit them during office hours. Join student groups in areas of interest. Engage in meaningful debate on the important issues of the day.”

Students will get acclimated to SBU during New Seawolf Welcome Week, an experience that introduces them to faculty, staff and fellow students through a unique schedule of assigned and “choose your own” workshops.

Stony Brook’s “Weeks of Welcome” festivities also include:

Monday, Aug. 15 through Monday, Aug. 22: Campus Dining Welcome Week. Special events are held every day at locations across the BSU campus, including a fire safety cooking demo, various featured cuisines, pop-up events, workshops and discussions.

Thursday, Aug. 18: Stony Brook women’s soccer against Fordham at LaValle Stadium, 6 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 19: Transfer Student Convocation

Wednesday, Aug. 17 through Sunday, Aug. 21: Open Hours at the Zuccaire Gallery from 12-4 p.m. Free and open to the public, everyone is welcome to enjoy arts and crafts activities, a self guided scavenger hunt, and more.

Saturday, Aug. 20: Community Service Day. A new campus tradition that allows first-year and transfer students the opportunity to get involved in a series of activities and service projects dedicated to improving the Stony Brook community and neighboring communities.
