Stony Brook University Statement on State Comptroller’s Hazardous Materials Report

The University’s safety programs for the storage and use of hazardous materials are overseen by numerous federal and state regulatory agencies. Stony Brook takes safety seriously and has implemented physical security and other controls that meet or exceed legal and regulatory requirements to safeguard our students, faculty, staff, and the public from hazardous materials and waste.

Stony Brook and SUNY do not agree with the report’s conclusions, and they may needlessly alarm our students, employees and campus communities. The OSC did not review the many layers of controls that the University has in place, nor did it assess the potential risk to determine the adequacy of controls.

University experts in the field of chemical, biological and radiological safety routinely evaluate and review opportunities for improvement to continue safeguarding our campus and communities.
