Last weekend, the Stony Brook Southampton campus community cleaned up trash from the beach on Warners Island in Shinnecock Bay.

Participants boarded the RV Peconic and traveled across eastern Shinnecock Bay to the island to remove various forms of trash and help improve the local coastal environment, which in turn helps protect marine and coastal wildlife.

Despite the strong winds, it was a beautiful sunny day with many opportunities to view seals and other marine life, collect shells and birdwatch (the gulls only splatted two students). It is now a much cleaner island, but the tire remains for another year.

The Southampton campus community has visited the beach annually for the past 12 years as part of the Town of Southampton’s Great East End Cleanup. The event was co-sponsored by the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and Southampton Student Life.
