The Stony Brook community mourns the loss of Dorothy Lichtenstein, Hon. ’14, a longtime supporter of Stony Brook Southampton arts programs and member of the Stony Brook Foundation Board of Trustees since 2008. She passed away at the age of 84 on July 4, 2024.
Dorothy was a passionate advocate for Southampton Arts, now known as the Lichtenstein Center, as well as Stony Brook’s Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, the home and studio of artists Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner. Her support helped both programs immeasurably, allowing them to fulfill their missions of inspiring and encouraging creativity.
In addition, her leadership and generosity extended to the university as a whole — from scholarships for undergraduate students to research about human evolution and biodiversity at Stony Brook’s research stations at Turkana Basin Institute in Kenya and the Centre ValBio in Madagascar.
In honor of Dorothy’s contributions to the arts, her careful stewardship of her husband’s legacy at the Lichtenstein Foundation, and her long-standing support of a host of university arts and research programs, the State University of New York Board of Trustees conferred her with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2014. She was also the honoree at the 19th Annual Stars of Stony Brook Gala in 2018.
