Stony Brook University has again been designated a “Tree Campus USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in recognition of the university’s dedication to campus healthy forestry management, sustainability and environmental stewardship.
SBU earned its recognition through the implementation of five core standards that promote the health of trees and student involvement to improve their forests. The University met the standards by establishing a campus tree advisory committee that developed a plan, allotting annual expenditures and brought in community members in the observance of Arbor Day.
The Tree Campus USA program recognizes college and university campuses that:
- Effectively manage their campus trees.
- Develop connectivity with the community beyond campus borders to foster healthy, urban forests.
- Strive to engage their student population utilizing service learning opportunities centered on campus, and community, forestry efforts.
Colleges and universities across the United States can be recognized as a Tree Campus USA college by meeting the standards developed by the Arbor Day Foundation to promote healthy trees and student involvement.
