Stony Brook University’s academic excellence and affordability have been recognized by Fiske Guide to Colleges 2017, which deems SBU one of the “academic leaders in the SUNY system.”
Stony Brook is among 21 public and 26 private colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada and the UK selected for inclusion in the guide. The university is recognized for a broad range of qualities including academics, diversity, state-of-the-art facilities, quality of student life on campus, extracurricular activities, food, housing, location and more.
Fiske editors profiled SBU as a school that “aims to be the model of a student-centered research university.” Fiske lists the natural sciences, engineering and the health fields as the major drawing cards for the University. It highlights the University’s curriculum, based on a series of learning outcomes, and organizes it into four categories: Demonstrate Versatility, Explore Interconnectedness, Pursue Deeper Understanding and Prepare for Life-Long Learning.
“Access to excellence is at the core of Stony Brook’s mission, so being recognized as one of the best among universities internationally by Fiske is a positive external validation for our faculty, staff and students,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. “This distinction further highlights the work of our award-winning faculty and accomplished students, and reinforces the University’s continued efforts to increase the value of a Stony Brook degree.”
Editors also noted that Stony Brook has become known for its highly competitive learning environment and its high-quality professors. Fiske lists anthropology, biology, business management, health science (physical therapy, nursing, etc.), psychology and sociology as among the strongest program offerings. Also noted by Fiske is Stony Brook University Hospital, which has been ranked among the nation’s best for teaching and offers a lot of opportunities for various research programs for undergrads as well as graduate students.
The review also mentions the abundant research opportunities available, vibrant campus life, student diversity and the Division I Athletics program. Athletics is coming off its best year in history with the Men’s Basketball team making its first ever appearance in the NCAA Basketball Tournament.
