Stony Brook has been ranked No. 25 among public universities  in the prestigious Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education U.S. College Rankings for 2020, representing an increase of five places over last year. Stony Brook is the highest ranked state institution in New York State and is ranked No. 105 among all U.S. universities, jumping 30 places from the previous ranking.

The higher rankings are due to particularly strong showings in the areas of campus environment and student outcomes and reflect a significant increase in reputation.

Campus 2 1 2“I am thrilled by our extraordinary rise in the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education rankings,” Interim President Michael A. Bernstein said. “This achievement is testimony to the  unwavering commitment of our faculty and staff to fostering institutional excellence at Stony Brook University. The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Ranking is a ranking of universities and colleges designed to emphasize graduate success and student learning.

Developed in partnership with US experts and universities, the ranking adopts a balanced scorecard approach, using 15 individual performance metrics, grouped into four pillars representing Resources (30%), Engagement (20%), Outcomes (40%) and Environment (10%). The 15 performance indicators were selected in order to answer the questions that matter the most to prospective students when choosing a university.

Data sources include the Times Higher Education (THE) U.S. Student Survey and the  THE Academic Reputation Survey, along with public data from IPEDS, the College Scorecard and Federal Student Aid on areas including completion rates and graduate employment. The THE Student Survey polled 170,00 current students on their college experience, focusing on motivation, engagement with learning, career impact, and satisfaction and value.

The full methodology can be found on the THE’s website.

Stony Brook continues to climb in major rankings of US and world higher education institutions. Recently, the university placed in the Top 100 of  Washington Monthly’s 2019 National University Rankings. Last spring, the University recorded its highest-ever ranking on Forbes magazine’s list of “America’s Best Value Colleges” and was ranked No.78 worldwide in the 2019 Times Higher Education Impact Ranking, a global university ranking that aims to measure an institution’s impact on society based on its success in delivering the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
