Stony Brook is a 2018 Tree Campus USA

The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Stony Brook University as a 2018 Tree Campus USA — a national program launched in 2008 that honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation.

Tree Campus USATo earn this distinction the University met five core standards for effective campus forest management:

  • Establishment of a tree advisory committee
  • Evidence of a campus tree-care plan
  • Dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program
  • Observance of Arbor Day
  • Sponsorship of student service-learning projects

By earning Tree Campus USA recognition, Stony Brook will play an important role in the success of a new initiative launched by the Arbor Day Foundation — Time for Trees — with unprecedented goals of planting 100 million trees in forests and communities and inspiring 5 million tree planters by 2022.

This year Tree Campus USA schools have collectively planted 32,204 trees and engaged 31,682 students.
