Stony Brook University will be hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, April 16, honoring a Long Island man fighting cancer for the third time.
Held at the Student Activities Center Ballroom A from 11 am to 8 pm, the blood drive is dedicated to Aidan Fischer, 23, of Northport, New York, and the 35,000 Seawolves who have donated blood over the past 20 years in collaboration with the New York Blood Center. Each pint of blood could potentially save three lives.
The event is organized by Kate Valerio, an advisor and volunteer with the Stony Brook University Blood Drive Committee, with help from SBU alumna Melanie Formosa ’23, a childhood friend of Fischer.
Fischer’s mother, Jenine Saccente, told local media the blood drive will hopefully raise awareness of platelet and granulocyte donations. Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell. Fischer’s father, Christopher Fischer, is a trauma education coordinator at Stony Brook Trauma Center.
