Stony Brook University is a varsity-level Esports school, and the SBU teams continue to thrive as fierce competitors from their newly equipped space in the Stony Brook Union. This academic year, SBU Esports became a university program under Campus Recreation and Wellness.

As of 2022, SBU Esports’ Valorant team is second in the nation. Valorant is a first-person tactical hero combat game, in which Stony Brook has found tremendous success. This winter season, two Stony Brook players were rated highly in College Valorant (CVAL) on their characters: player Huji was ranked third in all of CVAL for his character “Killjoy” and player Ethan, who was ranked number six of all CVAL for his character “Breach.”
In addition, the Esports Super Smash team qualified for the NACE Varsity Premier Grand Finals on Saturday, April 29. The team will be traveling to Indianapolis to compete at the Butler Esports Park.
Seawolves interested in cheering for the team can attend a Watch Party hosted by Recreation and Wellness in the Multi Purpose Room at the Recreation Center from 5 pm to 8 pm on Saturday.
“With these substantial accomplishments and the support of Recreation and Wellness, SBU Esports will continue to prosper. The teams have plans to recruit more players through scholarships as Esports moves forward to becoming a staple for Stony Brook University’s campus life and educational journey,” said Thomas Lail, assistant director of Intramurals and Sport Clubs and SBU Esports advisor.
