The Stony Brook University football team opened its CAA conference schedule with a bang on September 19, trouncing Rhode Island, 56-24, for its first win over a top-10 ranked team since 2019.
The Seawolves took the concept of “ground and pound” to a new level against the Rams, rushing for a program-record seven touchdowns and 329 yards. C.J. Hester ran for four scores — tying a team record — and 78 yards, while Jeremiah Coney gained 90 yards with three touchdowns. Quarterback Quinn Boyd led the attack with a career high 155 yards and added 198 passing yards and one touchdown through the air to James Dely. Hester leads the CAA with seven rushing touchdowns this season.
Stony Brook (2-2, 1-0) ran out to a 28-17 halftime lead in front of an enthusiastic crowd at LaValle Stadium and never looked back, winning at home for the seventh straight game dating back to last season. Rhode Island entered the game ranked eighth in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll and No. 13 in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll.
On defense, Lance Byndon, Miles McGoy and Jojo Garcia led SBU with eight tackles apiece. Sebastian Regis and Maurice Seals each registered a sack.
The Seawolves were a perfect 7-for-7 in the red zone and had 519 total yards, a season high and most since recording 559 yards against Monmouth in 2024.
