The Stony Brook University women’s lacrosse team rolled through the first two rounds of the NCAA championship tournament this weekend, beating Drexel, 16-4, on Friday and then bouncing Rutgers, 11-7, on Sunday. Both victories came at home at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Stony Brook advanced to the quarterfinals for the second-straight year and fourth time in the last five years, and will play on the road at No.1-ranked North Carolina on Thursday, May 19. The game will air on ESPNU, start time is 7:30 p.m.
Defense was key in the victory Sunday as the Seawolves held Big Ten finalist Rutgers to just three goals over the final 45 minutes. The win was Stony Brook’s 28th consecutive win at home, the second-longest active home winning streak in the nation.
Kailyn Hart’s third goal was her 14th hat trick of the season, 18th of her career and her 11th consecutive three-goal performance. Kyla Zapolski and Ellie Masera each scored twice. Haley Dillon anchored the game defensively, with three ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Charlie Campbell was one save from tying the Stony Brook NCAA Tournament program record with 12 saves, matching her season high.
The Seawolves outscored Drexel, 9-0, in the second half of Friday’s game to cruise to victory. Masera paced the attack with five goals and Hart scored four times, while Jaden Hampel and Morgan Mitchell each scored twice.
