The School of Social Welfare (SSW) hosted an open house luncheon on March 21 in honor of Social Work Month, to celebrate the hard work of all of the amazing social workers at Stony Brook University, Stony Brook University Hospital and the Long Island State Veterans Home.

One hundred sixty two social workers from around campus were invited to join the faculty and staff from SSW for a light lunch and networking.

“Community engagement is the heart of social work. It’s what we do, said SSW Dean Shari Miller. “Connection with the community provides opportunities for our students, and important conversations are had with our colleagues from around campus.”

More than 80 guests, including many alumni of the school, were in attendance.

The theme for Social Work Month 2023 is Social Work Breaks Barriers. Social work was established as a profession more than 90 years ago, which was also celebrated at the luncheon.
