Dean of the Stony Brook University (SBU) School of School of Communication and Journalism, Laura Lindenfeld, who also serves as the Executive Director of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, and SBU’s Vice President for Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, Judith Brown Clarke, were invited by The National Academies to participate in the Government University Industry Philanthropy Research Roundtable’s (GUIPRR) October meeting in Washington, DC.

Lindenfeld provided a presentation on “Bridging Institutional Networks through Communication Research and Practice” to the GUIPRR executive council. “Having the opportunity to talk with the GUIPRR leadership about how critically important communication research and practice are across all stages of research and development was a rewarding and impactful experience,” said Lindenfeld. “I was struck by the council’s investment in continuing the conversation and am delighted to bring the capacity we have built at Stony Brook to the table.”
Clarke moderated a panel discussion entitled “Universities on a Tightrope: Balancing National Security with Demands for Rapid Innovation.” The panel examined the challenges universities face in managing security risks as they grow international collaborations, import talent from around the world, and develop models for externalizing innovation beyond the campus. “I was thrilled to lead a panel that emphasized the significance of diverse viewpoints in crafting creative research strategies that expand the realm of innovation while maintaining national security priorities,” said Clarke. “This is an area where Stony Brook can truly excel and deliver impactful solutions.”
GUIPRR is a prestigious forum in which senior appointees of federal research agencies, joined by select industry, university, and philanthropic leaders, gather to discuss promising new opportunities and deliberate issues that challenge and build bridges between government, university, and industry sectors centered on the productivity and dynamism of the nation’s research enterprise.
SBU’s Office of Federal Relations assisted in facilitating Lindenfeld and Clarke’s participation in GUIPRR. Assistant Vice President for Federal Relations, Lauren Brookmeyer, works closely with SBU leadership, faculty, staff, and students to enhance the university and hospital’s presence in Washington, DC.
