Stony Brook University’s American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) chapter attended the 2025 AIChE Mid-Atlantic Student Regional Conference hosted by Lehigh University on April 25 and 26.
Every year, AIChE-SBU travels to regional and national conferences to compete in competitions (ChemE-Sports, ChemE Jeopardy, Chem-E-Car), present research, attend career fairs, and network with students and industry professionals. Professor Stefanos (Steve) Nitodas of the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering served as the faculty advisor for 18 students. In addition, he also was a Chem-E-Car safety judge.

“Our students worked hard in preparing for the competitions, and the knowledge and hands-on experience they have acquired through this process will be beneficial for them at the beginning of their professional path,” Nitodas said.
AIChE-SBU had two teams competing in the ChemE Jeopardy competition. Team 1 finished in second place and advanced to the National ChemE Jeopardy competition that will take place in November at the 2025 AIChE Student Annual Conference in Boston. This is a first-time accomplishment for the ChemE Jeopardy team.
AIChE-SBU also had two teams that competed virtually in the regional ChemE-Sports Spring 2025 competition. Team 2 accomplished a record-setting performance and placed third in the United States for the first time in its history.

The Chem-E-Car team was also thrilled to compete at Regionals. The team debuted its new car, Mystery Machine. The team was not able to advance to the Nationals this time, but the team will continue to improve the mechanism and chassis for next year’s Regionals.
Three students did an outstanding job presenting their research in the poster session, and AIChE-SBU hopes to bring more research presenters to future conferences.
