In February, Stony Brook University will celebrate Black History Month with events, performances, and discussions celebrating the culture and history of the Pan-African community. This year’s Black History Month theme, African Americans and Labor, highlights the ways in which work has shaped the experiences of Black people throughout history.
“Black History Month is an opportunity to create spaces that foster a sense of belonging for those within the Pan-African diaspora,” said Donna-Lee Mahabeer, director of Diversity, Intercultural and Community Engagement (DICE) and co-chair of the Black History Month Committee. “It’s also a chance for others to deepen their appreciation for the culture and engage with the many facets of the diaspora.”
The month-long tradition, coordinated by DICE, the Department of Africana Studies, and the Black History Month Committee, will feature educational and cultural activities designed to honor African American and Black heritage while promoting awareness of the ongoing struggle for equality, inclusion, and social justice.
The festivities begin on February 5 with the Black History Month Student Union Takeover: A Celebration of Culture and Unity!
Hosted by DICE, the event will feature performances by student organizations, opportunities to connect with Black student groups, and a chance to win prizes and giveaways, with refreshments sponsored by the UNITI Cultural Center and New Student and Transition Programs.
