Stony Brook University student veteran Ryan O’Keeffe was recently selected to participate in the Student Veterans of America Leadership Institute.
O’Keeffe, a senior in the College of Business who served in the United States Marine Corps, was selected to be an Student Veterans of America (SVA) Leadership Fellow, earning an all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for a weekend of networking and intense leadership training.
The SVA Leadership Institute brings together America’s top SVA chapter leaders through an immersive experience designed to equip tomorrow’s leaders to serve and create a lasting community of impact.
O’Keeffe is a valued member of Stony Brook’s Military and Veteran Student Services team. He works as a student employee and business intern, is a Vets-4-Vets mentor, is treasurer of the Veteran Student Organization and was a big part of having SBU named as a silver Military Friendly School in 2022- 2023. O’Keefe will also be this year’s emcee at the university’s annual Veteran’s Day ceremony on Wednesday, November 9.
Fellows are coached directly by SVA alumni mentors in groups of 10 on leadership behavior, personal branding, fostering relationships and driving impact. SVA’s National Headquarters staff coached attendees on the latest developments in national policy and advocacy for student veterans, supporters and allies.
Fellows also attended virtual discussions and team-building activities with mentors and leaders in business, nonprofit and advocacy.
While in Washington, O’Keeffe toured the White House and the National Mall, and met with officials from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
