Recognizing Milestones

55-year honorees Norm Goodman and Marv Goldfried at the 2015 Service Awards.

For more than 35 years, Stony Brook University has held a Service Awards Celebration to honor employees who have hit major milestones of service to the University. And while this year’s event could not be held due to COVID-19, the University is proud to recognize the dedicated employees who reached 25+ years of service in 2019.

Last year, 366 employees reached a service milestone. 147 people have worked at Stony Brook for 25 years, 117 for 30 years and 46 people have been here 35 years. A record number of 43 have been here for 40 years, eight marked 45 years on campus and three recently celebrated more than 50 years. And, for the first time, two distinguished professors – Marv Goldfried and Norm Goodman – celebrated 55-years of service, an incredible achievement.

Distinguished Professor Marvin Goldfried, Department of Psychology, is so revered in the field of clinical psychology that the American Psychological Association bestowed upon him the Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Knowledge. He was also honored for his work by the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration, who renamed their New Researcher Award in his honor. And while he has received almost every psychology award known to humankind, including most recently the American Psychological Foundation Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology, Goldfried relates that he is most proud of the accomplishments of his graduate students.

Norm Goodman, Distinguished Teaching and Service Professor, Department of Sociology, is a true Stony Brook legend. Admired not only for his dedication to his students and his field but also for his passion for advocating for all that is right. A sociologically-oriented social psychologist, Goodman was the first person in SUNY to be awarded two distinguished professorships. He was chair of the Department of Sociology for 20 years, president of the senate of the College of Arts and Science, twice president of the University Faculty Senate, served as Vice President for the senate for three terms and edited the SUNY University Senate Bulletin for more than 20 years. Goodman says he is particularly proud of his role in facilitating Stony Brook’s transition to a major, internationally renowned institution of higher education and being a major player in the effort to ensure that campus policies and practices are established through a process of shared governance.

The 50-Year Honorees

For 2019, there were three 50-year honorees: Sherry Chang, University Libraries; Ken Short, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Sanford Simon, departments of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and Pathology.

Sherry Chang has been instrumental in helping students and faculty with their research and reports as an integral part of the University Libraries, receiving a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship for her contributions. Chang reports she is most proud of leading the 2016 renovation project that transformed two reading rooms in Melville Library into “knowledge commons,” creating an incredible study space that is unrivaled in all of SUNY.

Kenneth Short is a much-loved professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, receiving a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1985. For many years, he was the undergraduate program director and also served as chair of the department. In 2019, he was honored with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineer’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The award cites Professor Short’s “lasting excellence and unparalleled dedication to electrical engineering education.” He also continues to give back to his students, having set up a scholarship that is awarded annually to a CEAS senior majoring in computer engineering.

Sanford Simon, a professor in the departments of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and Pathology, was the first basic sciences hire in the School of Medicine. During his tenure, he has helped to deliver innovative education programs to thousands of students and produce world-class research at the interface of basic science and medicine. As a mentor, he has encouraged young scientists to reach their greatest potential; among them, multiple students who have gone on to important faculty positions in the School of Medicine.

Congratulations, and thank you to all employees for your years of dedicated services.
