Raja Jaber, MD, an associate clinical professor of family medicine and director of Lifestyle and Integrative Medicine in the Department of Family, Population and Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook University’s Renaissance School of Medicine, is featured in TIME Magazine’s new special issue, “The Future of Medicine.”
Jaber is featured in the article, “Lifestyles of the Healthy and Wise” by Janet Lee, where she describes how lifestyle plays a huge role in many chronic conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain cancers.
“In our country and even in the rest of the world, we have a lifestyle that promotes chronic diseases, and, unless we change that, the number of people who have these conditions will increase exponentially, as will health care spending,” Jaber said.
In a section on “restorative sleep,” Jaber talks about the “epidemic of sleep apnea,” and points to obesity as a big culprit.
Jaber co-directs and teaches a nutrition course to first- and second-year medical students and teaches integrative family medicine to medical students and residents. She offers integrative primary and consultative care that is comprehensive, wholistic, individualized and centered on patients’ unique needs and goals, combining state-of-the-art conventional family medicine with lifestyle medicine (nutrition, exercise, stress management), mind-body, botanical, and manual medicine to create a whole-person approach to health and illness.
Jaber’s clinical model integrates conventional medicine with nutritional, mind-body and exercise/manual medicine. She has conducted a successful group visits program for patients with hyperlipidemia, asthma, and osteoporosis, and conducts stress reduction workshops based on mindfulness meditation, and has published several articles on the process of change, the doctor-patient relationship, and group visits.
“The Future of Medicine” is a collection of stories that detail amazing breakthroughs, new technology and innovative trends that will help people stay healthy in the future. It is available for purchase online.
