Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley, Jr., M.D. today attended Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Long Island bill signing of “START-UP NY,” a bold initiative to boost the state’s economic development, attract out-of-state businesses to New York and create jobs by capitalizing on the unique assets of SUNY and higher education institutions across the state.
The ceremony held at SUNY College at Old Westbury and hosted by President Calvin Butts, was also attended by Farmingdale State College President Hubert Keen, Nassau Community College Acting President Kenneth Saunders and local and state elected officials.
At the ceremony Governor Cuomo provided an overview of the 2013 Legislative Session. He highlighted START-UP NY which will establish tax free communities on or near university and college campuses to leverage research, technology and expertise with the goal of commercialization and job creation. The program expects to attract high-tech and other start-ups, venture capital, new business and investments from across the world. START-UP NY will entice companies to bring their ventures to New York by offering new businesses the opportunity to operate completely tax-free – including no income tax for employees, no sales, property or business tax – while also partnering with the world-class higher education institutions in the SUNY system.
“Stony Brook University stands ready to implement Governor Cuomo’s vision to create new business in the high technology areas and utilize our experience in advancing research into the marketplace,” President Stanley said. “Stony Brook has been in the business of developing start-up companies for many years at its Long Island High Technology Incubator as well as our Advanced Energy Center of Excellence, our Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology, our Sensor CAT and biotechnology CAT along with our Calverton Incubator. Years from now, New Yorkers will look back at START-UP NY as the game changer that returned New York’s competitive edge in the global marketplace.”
