President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, drew attention to UN Women’s HeForShe program, a global initiative in support of gender equality, in a Huffington Post op-ed published April 12, 2016.
President Stanley is one of HeForShe’s 10 founding university IMPACT champions, charged with galvanizing momentum in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, and in this capacity attended the World Economic Forum in Davos.
President Stanley’s participation as an IMPACT 10x10x10 champion makes Stony Brook University one of 10 universities around the world committing to take bold, game-changing action to achieve gender equality within and beyond their institutions.
“Universities are a key venue for discussing, instilling, and ensuring gender equality,” Stanley wrote.
“Our goals at Stony Brook include redressing gender imbalances from matriculation to graduation; using the University’s Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities to build global understanding of the role for men in achieving gender equality; and, integrating gender equality into the academic and social experience,” he continued.
