In Money magazine’s annual list of the Best Colleges for Your Money, Stony Brook University ranked #54 overall and #32 among public universities in the nation. With the goal of identifying schools that provide the best education at the most reasonable price, Money evaluated 711 schools on 27 factors in three categories — quality of education, affordability and student outcomes.

According to Braden J. Hosch, Assistant Vice President of the Office of Institutional Research, Planning & Effectiveness, social mobility is the primary reason our ranking jumped significantly from #125 in 2016 to #54 in 2017. The biggest change to this year’s methodology was the addition of data on schools’ track records of moving low-income students into the upper middle class.

A Stony Brook education provides a proven path toward upward income mobility for students from low-income households. In a Stanford University study, Mobility Report Cards: The Role of Colleges in Intergenerational Mobility, Stony Brook ranks among the top 10 colleges and universities in the nation whose students begin college at the bottom fifth of income distribution and then go on to earn in the top three-fifths of income distribution.
