In this position, Byington will report to President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, and serve as the senior executive responsible for managing Stony Brook’s financial, administrative and facilities operations. Working at the highest level of the University to advance its mission of education, research, and service, Byington will lead seven direct reports including the Vice Presidents for Finance and Human Resource Services, the Office of Internal Audit, and the Associate and Assistant Vice Presidents responsible for all facilities maintenance and design and construction activity, which currently includes approximately $800 million in projects on Stony Brook’s campuses.

“Kathy has demonstrated creativity, innovation, and strategic thinking in her prior roles,” President Stanley said. “I look forward to the contributions she will make at Stony Brook as we look to strengthen the University’s infrastructure, systems, and overall capacity in financial planning, management, analysis, and reporting.”

Byington will also oversee University Police and Emergency Management, Environmental Health and Safety, and Parking and Transportation. She will work closely with the Provost and the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, and their respective financial officers, to develop and implement a shared vision for how the University can best generate, sustain, and deploy resources to pursue institutional priorities and academic goals.

As Associate Vice President for Business Operations and Operational Excellence at Yale University, Byington led all the teams that deliver financial and administrative services at the school and department level. She ensured that lead administrators, operations managers, and business office staff from across the university worked together as a team, and as full partners with other university finance and administrative offices in providing high quality support to Yale’s faculty, students, and staff.

Prior to her appointment at Yale, Byington served as Vice President for Administration and Finance at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, from 2009-2015, Vice President and Chief Business Officer at Georgetown University Medical Center from 2005-2007, Chief Financial Officer at Dartmouth Medical School from 2001-2007, and Finance Director for Genetics Institute from 1992-1999. She has a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University and a M.B.A. from Northeastern University.
