Warm Welcome from HR at Stronger Together Event

Human Resources (HR) hosted a Stronger Together event August 4, featuring fun, facts, tips and treats for more than 1,000 faculty, students and staff members outside the Student Activities Center (SAC).

“In the spirit of the Stronger Together initiative, our goal was to provide a forum for people to come together, reconnect, and know they are supported by HR and other departments across the University,” said HR Vice President Lynn Johnson. “It was an overwhelming joy to see how many people took part and received that important message from us while enjoying tasty treats, including Haagen Dazs ice cream bars and lots of great giveaways.”

HR’s booth featured access to up-to-date benefits and other information; the opportunity to ask questions; a look at HR’s recently unveiled, redesigned website; along with some Brookology swag, courtesy of Community Relations.

HR’s Kristen Blandi and Jennifer Rossler staffed the booth for the two-hour event, which was crowded from start to finish, with the website getting some rave reviews. “It was so great to get such positive feedback,” said Blandi. “People had a lot of fun checking out who was pictured on the site.”

“We got to show them how easy it is to navigate, the online learning opportunities available, and the fact that it’s designed around the ‘human’ aspect of Human Resources,” added Rossler. “Here’s where you can find the faces of the campus!”

At Healthier U’s booth, the boxes upon boxes of free insulated lunch bags – which participants filled with everything from trail mix, to stress balls, pens, nutrition tip sheets or all of the above – went like ‘hotcakes’ with almost all inventory gone by the end of the event.

Healthier U interns Jessica Nelson and Monterrey Miller staffed that booth and couldn’t be more excited about the turnout, engagement and their ability to help promote Healthier U’s mission.

“We were able to give out several hundred lunchboxes and flyers about employee resources and wellness education to those who attended!” said Nelson. On a broader level, she added, “Being a part of Healthier U is so empowering as I get to help inspire folks to improve their overall well-being. I think many faculty, staff and students are more than ready to enjoy Stony Brook on-campus life and this ice cream social gave them a sweet taste of what’s to come in the near future.”

Healthier U Director Cathrine Duffy is equally optimistic about fall semester and beyond: “I’m so excited to be working with partners across the University as we plan to resume events that were previously on pause due to COVID-19. We are also so happy to be part of the ongoing Stronger Together campaign that’s helping us all come together, stronger than ever!”

As it did with the kickoff Stronger Together event, the Faculty Student Association (FSA) played a key role in getting this event off the ground, helping orchestrate all logistics, food service, music and more, as well as having its own booth. FSA’s Kenny Desai said, “It was great to interact with a lot of faculty, staff and students who want to see when things are opening, and where and how they can order food from various venues.”

FSA’s booth featured VIP shopping passes for Shop Red West, Wolfie Wallet flyers, info sheets on the ‘FREE GET Mobile app’ that now allows you to pay and order all around campus (not just Starbucks), as well as the welcome news that the Starbucks in the Melville Library is open.

And speaking of food, the event gave out a record 1,000+ ice cream bars. And as a last-minute, mouthwatering addition, FSA also provided sample cups of Chef Jet’s Thai Basil Tofu with Sweet Chili Sauce on Thin Rice Noodles and Tadka’s Chicken Tikka Masala, Steamed Basmati Rice and Cucumber Yogurt Raita. These – along with Mac & Cheesyology – will be three new ‘comfort food’ concepts at Roth Food Court this fall.

Next Stronger Together event is an Athletic Facilities Open House with tours, snacks and more fun. It’s this Thursday, August 12, 12-2 p.m. See the Stronger Together Calendar of Events webpage for more on this and future events.

FSA’s Grand Opening event at Roth Food Court will take place Wednesday, September 22 with Celebrity Chef Jet Tila. (Follow @sbu_eats for more details.)
