As graduation looms for the Class of 2023, Grad Day celebrated the graduates and kicked off the countdown to commencement. The April 19 event was co-sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Government and the Stony Brook University Alumni Association.
Despite brisk temperatures, hundreds of students attended the event, held on the Shop Red West outdoor patio.
Festivities included an ice cream social, photo booth, graduation portraits, and a live DJ, along with class ring and regalia presentations.

Staff and students at the Center for Civic Justice booth encouraged students to register to vote, while another booth included a sign on which students noted what activities they would like to complete before commencement.
Stony Brook University President Maurie McInnis attended the event and posed for pictures with students, along with Stony Brook’s mascot, Wolfie, who was named SUNY Mascot Madness champion for the second consecutive year.
Among the most popular booths was the Alumni Association table, where staff welcomed graduating seniors to the family of alumni Seawolves and discussed the ways to remain connected after graduation.
Senior Associate Director of Alumni Relations Kristin Matthews greeted students at the table and noted, “The excitement of Grad Day provided the perfect forum for the alumni team to connect and engage with graduates, and hear about their experiences as students and their future plans. These connections are mutually beneficial and build lasting relationships. We look forward to the fun and festivities at commencement and congratulating the Class of 2023. On behalf of the Stony Brook Alumni Association, it is with great pride and pleasure to welcome the Class of 2023 to our esteemed community of more than 210,000 alumni strong across all 50 states and in 119 countries.”
