ARWU, also known as the Shanghai Ranking, is one of the top three major publications of international rankings, along with the Times Higher Education and QS World Rankings. While ARWU has published overall university ranks since 2003, publication of subject-area rankings began in 2017.

The 2021 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) includes more than 1,800 out of 4,000 universities across 93 countries and regions. The GRAS rankings use a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of world universities in respective subjects, including research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality and international academic awards.
