Stony Brook University is making a powerful impact upon the Washington, DC higher education community with the recent election of Lauren Brookmeyer, associate vice president for federal relations and head of the D.C. office, as chair of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ (APLU) Council on Governmental Affairs (CGA). Securing this national leadership role, which Brookmeyer officially assumed last month, empowers the university to be a driving force in shaping federal higher education policy and the research funding advocacy agenda in D.C.

As chair of the CGA, Brookmeyer will guide and influence national higher education and research advocacy discussions to support and enhance the work of public research universities, positioning Stony Brook University at the forefront of key negotiations in our nation’s capital.

“I am deeply honored to serve as chair of APLU’s Council on Governmental Affairs,” said Brookmeyer. “I look forward to collaborating with my APLU colleagues across the country as we continue to advance the vital work of APLU in advocating for sound policies and critical funding that support public universities. The importance of this work has never been more evident as the US seeks to win the global innovation race. I am excited to contribute to APLU’s efforts ensuring public universities obtain the federal support necessary to continue playing a pivotal role in driving our nation’s future success.”

The CGA will hold its 2025 Winter Meeting on February 26 and February 27 in Washington, D.C. Some of the key topics to be discussed include the Administration’s new Executive Orders and federal agency guidance, the higher education community’s Fiscal Year (FY) 25 and FY26 federal appropriations priorities, and budget reconciliation.

APLU is a membership organization that fosters a community of university leaders collectively working to advance the mission of public research universities. The association’s membership consists of nearly 250 public research universities, land-grant institutions, state university systems, and affiliated organizations spanning across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, six U.S. territories, Canada, and Mexico.
