Stony Brook University has officially launched the first phase of its new Facilities Master Plan (FMP) — a bold, forward-looking initiative that will guide the evolution of our campus for the next decade and beyond.

To kick off this exciting journey, every member of the Seawolf community was invited to share their voice through an interactive survey. This survey explored how students, faculty and staff experience our campus — from buildings and landscapes to signage and pathways. The survey closed on May 9, and the response was outstanding.

Vice President for Facilities and Services Bill Herrmann shared his appreciation:

“We’re absolutely thrilled by the incredible response to the FMP survey! On behalf of my team and our partners at Sasaki, thank you to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts and experiences. Your voices are not only heard — they’re vital. Every single response will be carefully reviewed and woven into the planning process as we work together to shape the future of Stony Brook University.”

The FMP is about more than just buildings, it’s about aligning our physical spaces with Stony Brook’s mission and strategic goals. This includes supporting academic excellence, student success, cutting-edge research, world-class healthcare, technological innovation, cultural enrichment and community engagement across Long Island.

In collaboration with Sasaki, a globally recognized architecture and planning firm, the Facilities Master Plan Steering Committee will now begin analyzing the survey data. These insights will inform early recommendations for both short- and long-term development opportunities.

Over the next 16 months, the planning process will continue to evolve — with more opportunities for the campus community to get involved. Together, we’ll build the blueprint for Stony Brook’s future.

BE part of the blueprint. The future starts now.
