A small group of select high school students participated in Stony Brook University’s Computer Science and Informatics Summer Research Experience Program (CSIRE), an intensive six-week summer research program conducted jointly by the departments of Biomedical Informatics (BMI) and Computer Science (CS) in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
The program, spearheaded by Professor Fusheng Wang, ran from June 27 through August 5 and received a record number of 155 applications for only 31 available seats, a significant increase over the 93 applications received in 2021. Applications were received from more than 15 different states and two foreign countries, and about 50 percent of the applicants were female.
Programming skills are required to apply and preparations for the program began over one month before the start. Each mentor typically asks their students to prepare such skills through tutorials and to familiarize themselves with the necessary tools before the program begins so that they can hit the ground running on day one.
The students gained valuable knowledge from a record number of 18 Stony Brook University faculty. In addition to one-on-one mentoring, students participated in six research seminars, three career seminars and an on-campus lab tour.
