Close-up photos of snowflakes taken by a high-powered Cannon SLR camera at a SoMAS facility on the Stony Brook University campus are used to investigate cloud and precipitation microphysics during snowstorms. Mariko Oe, PhD, a SoMAS research scientist, and her colleagues analyze the visuals and use other technologies to see how ice particles form during storms, what density, size and shapes occur with flakes, and apply their knowledge to better understand the characteristics of precipitation during snow storms.
