Celebrating Excellence: Graduate Student Appreciation Week at Stony Brook

Career panel

Stony Brook University hosted Graduate Student Appreciation Week from April 7 to April 11, offering a full slate of events that celebrated the accomplishments and community spirit of its graduate student population. Organized by the Graduate School, the week provided opportunities for students to connect, reflect and engage in both professional and personal development.

Career panel
The Career Development Panel included (left to right) Dave Rubenstein, Ashley Staples, Molly Lotz, Liz Boon, Brandon Bjertnes, and Alison Eassa and Alfreda James.

The week kicked off on Monday afternoon with a Career Development Panel in the Student Activities Center (SAC) Auditorium. Moderated by Karishma Trejo, graduate student advocate and current MBA student, the panel featured professionals from across campus who shared advice on navigating the job market and building a meaningful career after graduate school. Students in attendance heard candid reflections on career paths that aren’t always linear, the importance of networking and the value of being adaptable. The session encouraged students to consider a wide range of possibilities beyond academia and gave them space to ask questions specific to their field or goals. It was a fantastic way to start the week!

Celia marshik with students at gpd student coffee event
Graduate School Dean Celia Marshik met with students at the GPD Student Coffee Chat.

On Tuesday, students gathered in SAC Ballroom B for the GPD Student Coffee Chat, a casual event that gave students the ability to converse with graduate program directors and Dean of the Graduate School Celia Marshik. Over snacks and coffee, students were able to share feedback and build relationships with administrators who shape the graduate experience at Stony Brook. This opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with those who lead their programs was an invaluable experience for graduate students.

Accomplishment board
Students were encouraged to share their accomplishments for everyone to read at the Accomplishment Celebration.

Wednesday evening was full of recognition, where graduate students came together in the SAC Shore Club for the Accomplishment Celebration. The event was a chance to take a pause and acknowledge the milestones reached over the past year. From dissertation defenses and fellowship awards to published papers and successful lab experiments, the room was filled with stories of perseverance and progress. Students were encouraged to share their accomplishments by writing them on an accomplishment board for everyone to read. Faculty and staff also joined the celebration, offering their congratulations and showing appreciation for the critical role graduate students play in driving Stony Brook’s mission.

Donut event
The Coffee and Donuts drop-in event welcomed students to grab a treat and chat with friends.

The focus on community continued Thursday with a Coffee and Donuts drop-in event hosted in the SAC Lobby. Designed as a midweek pick-me-up, the gathering welcomed students to grab a treat and chat with friends. This gave students a moment to recharge between meetings and lab work, while still feeling connected to the broader celebration happening throughout campus. The first 50 students also received a new Graduate Student Appreciation Mug.

Journaling event
Students took part in a Journal Decorating session designed to encourage mindfulness and self-expression.

Friday marked the final day of the week and ended on a creative and calming note. In the Graduate Student Lounge, students took part in a Journal Decorating session designed to encourage mindfulness and self-expression. Alongside crafting supplies and blank journals, resource materials on mental health and campus wellness services were available. For many students balancing intense academic workloads, the event was a gentle reminder to care for their mental and emotional well-being just as they care for their academics.

Each day of the week, the GSO Lounge remained open with free snacks, ensuring that students passing through had a reliable space to relax, snack or study in the company of peers.

When Katie Flood, assistant director of operations at the Graduate School, was asked about the week, she mentioned how “Organizing a week full of Graduate Student Appreciation events was such a meaningful opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of our graduate students and a great way to create spaces for connection, celebration, and community. Seeing students come together, laugh, share stories, and simply enjoy one another’s company was a beautiful reminder of the warmth and spirit of the graduate community at Stony Brook!”

Flood worked with several Graduate School staff members to organize the week of events, including Ally Brasino, graduate student services specialist; Christine Greenberg, director of graduate student services; and Karishma Trejo, graduate student advocate.

Trejo emphasized the significance of the celebration, “Graduate Student Appreciation Week was an important recognition of everything graduate students have to offer Stony Brook University,” she said. “It was an honor to produce something that students enjoyed, and I hope that this is the beginning of a long-standing tradition.”

Graduate Student Appreciation Week at Stony Brook University underscored a collective message: that graduate students are not just learners and researchers, but essential members of the university community whose work, ideas and experiences shape the institution in countless ways. Through panels, celebrations, casual chats and quiet moments of creativity, the week offered a comprehensive show of appreciation — and a renewed sense of connection — for those working at the highest levels of education.
