Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at Stony Brook

Hispanic top image 1Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, Stony Brook University will showcase community leaders, faculty, staff and students through the 2023 theme — “Driving Prosperity, Power and Progress in America.”

The university’s 34th annual Hispanic heritage Month Opening Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, October 4, from 1 pm to 2:30 pm in the Student Activities Center, Ballroom A featuring keynote speaker Bergre Escorbores’00, ’01, a leader in the Long Island community and field of education. The program also includes performances, music and food.

Other events throughout the month include:

Thursday, October 5, 7 pm
Exhibition Tour and Craft Night
Zuccaire Gallery, Staller Center
Meet up at the Zuccaire Gallery for a student-led tour (English and Spanish) of Shimon Attie’s exhibition, The View from Below, and a craft related to personal and family narratives of migration. Limited to 20 participants. RSVP on link.

CocoMonday, October 9, 4 pm
Disney Pixar Coco Live to Film Concert
Main Stage, Staller Center
Don’t miss this screening of the beloved Disney film Coco, featuring a live performance of the Oscar and Grammy-winning musical score performed by a live 20-member Latin ensemble. Purchase tickets.

East and West Side Dine-in
Enjoy a menu from Peru, including arroz con pollo (chicken and rice), patacones (fried green plantains), ensalada de papa (potato salad) and flan.

Tuesday, October 17, 4 pm to 9 pm

Chef Juan Garcia of East Side Dining loves to prepare comfort foods such as traditional rice and beans and pernil (slow-roasted pork) from his family’s recipes in Puerto Rico. Taste his menu of pollo guisado (chicken stew), yellow rice with peas, pork chicharrón with lime, pickled red onions and avocado crema.

Enjoy a menu from Costa Rica, including chifrijo (fried pork belly and stewed black beans), arroz blanco (white rice), carne guisada (beef stew) and yucca fritta (fried yucca).

Enjoy a menu from Puerto Rico, including Puerto Rican pork shoulder, yellow rice, ham with pigeon peas, sautéed chayotes with tomato, sofrito and tres leches cake.

Come enjoy  a traditional dinner and celebrate and recognize the achievements and contributions of faculty, staff and students.
