Stony Brook University was well represented at the 2025 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, which recognized outstanding work in local print, broadcast and online journalism.
The annual event, held June 5 at Fox Hollow in Woodbury, NY, honored the best in local journalism in the following categories: narrative, video, digital, radio, visual, student journalism and special awards and scholarships.
Stony Brook Magazine features editor Liza N. Burby won second place for Narrative/Reporter of the Year for her work with the magazine and Newsday. Burby also won first place in Narrative/Real Estate for AARP Magazine, took first and third place in Narrative/Arts for articles in Newsday, and earned third place in Narrative/Race and Diversity for work in Newsday.
SBU News writer Beth Squire won third place in Narrative/Education Reporting for her story, ‘Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Stony Brook Student Athletes’.
Student journalists at Stony Brook also did extremely well, winning 14 awards. The Statesman won eight awards for Student Journalism, including first for Best College News Website, and first and second place in both the Investigative and Narrative/News Story categories. It placed second for Best College Newspaper, and third in both Narrative/Feature story and Narrative/College Newspaper reporter (Mariam Guirgis).
The Stony Brook Press won first place for both Narrative/Best Magazine and Visual/Magazine cover design, earned second place for Best Website, and took third in Student Journalism Narrative/News Story.
The Stony Brook Media Group took first for Student Journalism/Video Feature Package and second for Student Journalism/Best College TV Reporter (Miles Reese).
WUSB-FM won three awards, led by Play It Forward, which took first place for Radio/Solutions Journalism and second place for Podcast. WUSB also placed third in Radio/Environment.
WSHU Public Radio — whose Long Island News Bureau is embedded within and collaborates with the School of Communication and Journalism (SoCJ) — won three awards, including first place for Best Radio News Station, first for Podcast (Off the Path) and second for Radio/Environment. The bureau is largely staffed by SoCJ students and mentored more than 35 Stony Brook interns since moving the bureau to campus in 2020.
The Press Club of Long Island is one of the largest chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists and is devoted to protecting and advocating for First Amendment rights, furthering ethical standards and providing ongoing training for its members.
The awards ceremony also included inductions of the newest members of the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame, which PCLI founded in 2014. This year’s inductees were John Hildebrand, Ellen Mitchell and Timothy Bolger.
