Along with SUNY Chancellor John King Jr., members of the Spirit of Stony Brook marched down Fifth Avenue in the New York City Pride March on June 29, joined by students, staff and alumni from other SUNY schools, including Albany, Plattsburgh, Hudson and Farmingdale, to make up the unique SUNY Pride Band.
“At SUNY, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that all students are welcomed and are part of an inclusive and respectful environment when they come to any of our 64 campuses,” said SUNY Chancellor King. “We know that diversity is our strength, that love is love, and that everyone deserves to live as their true selves. We revel in Pride Month, and we will continue to ensure that every student, every educator, every staff member, and every visitor will always feel welcomed and respected when they are part of SUNY.”
The New York City Pride March — one of the largest of its kind in the world — is a vibrant celebration and demonstration for LGBTQ+ rights, featuring floats, marchers and millions of spectators.
With this year’s theme, “Rise Up: Pride and Protest,” the event was a powerful display of unity as everyone joined together in the spirit of inclusion and love. The crowd was full of excitement as they danced and cheered for Stony Brook’s incredible drumline.
The march commemorates the Stonewall Riots of June 1969, when New York became the birthplace of the Gay Rights movement and the quest for equal treatment under the law for all LGBTQIA+ Americans.
