Arthur H. Lee has been appointed President of SUNY Korea, LLC, effective January 1, 2022. The announcement was made December 28, 2021, by the Board of Managers of SUNY Korea, LLC.
Lee will be responsible for supporting and strengthening the university’s vision, “to become an exemplary higher educational institution that thrives in today’s fast-paced society and beyond,” and its mission, “to foster leaders who are able to resolve global challenges creatively and open doors to a new era full of possibilities.” Lee will also actively collaborate with faculty, staff, and students of home campuses in New York, including Stony Brook University and the Fashion Institute of Technology, and will be responsible for maintaining constructive relationships with the Korean National Government and Ministries, Incheon City Government, and the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority.
“Dr. Lee is an open and collaborative leader who is focused on building a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment for faculty, staff, and students,” said Paul Goldbart, Stony Brook University executive vice president and provost. “He is deeply committed to supporting faculty as they pursue their scholarly endeavors and their work as educators and supporting staff as they provide services to the university community. As a visionary leader, I am certain that Dr. Lee will play an integral role in continuing to elevate the performance and reputation of SUNY Korea. As the president of SUNY Korea, he will be responsible for overseeing the academic and administrative operations of the university and providing leadership for stakeholders in the U.S. and Korea.”
SUNY Korea was established in 2012 to serve the transnational needs for quality and global education by offering SUNY institutions’ prestigious programs in Korea. With approximately 1,000 students from 40 countries currently enrolled, SUNY Korea offers seven undergraduate and eight graduate degree programs. It started with the graduate programs of Stony Brook University’s Department of Technology & Society and Department of Computer Science. Since then, SUNY Korea has opened three additional departments including Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics & Statistics, and Business Management. In fall 2017, SUNY Korea launched two departments of the Fashion Institute of Technology: Fashion Design and Fashion Business Management.
Students enrolled at Stony Brook University are eligible for Study Abroad at SUNY Korea, and undergraduate students at SUNY Korea are required to spend one year on the Stony Brook University campus in New York State.
Lee received his BS degree in Computer Science from the University of Utah, his MS in Computer Science from Stanford University, and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Utah. Lee has served as the provost and interim president of SUNY Korea.
As the first branch of Stony Brook University built outside of the United States, it represents a groundbreaking effort to provide world-class education. The Distinguished Professorship is conferred upon individuals who have achieved national or international prominence and a distinguished reputation.
